Ubuntu 9.10: desktop troppo grande

Questa mattina, all'improvviso, mi sono ritrovato con un desktop troppo
grande rispetto allo schermo 15". Scheda grafica integrata MGA G200e.

La risoluzione è corretta, 1024x768 @ 60 Hz, ma le icone marginali sono
mezze coperte dai bordi del monitor.

Dove posso agire per rimettere le cose a posto?

Non va.
Tieni presente che la barra superiore e la barra inferiore sono nei
limiti dello schermo.

Inoltre, per prova, ho installato Fluxbox e entrando con questo desktop è
tutto regolare.

Penso che qualcosa in Gnome sia andato in malora, ma non so cosa!

prova a rinominare la dir nascosta con le impostazioni gnomesche, prob.
è solo qlc file di configurazione che si è danneggiato;

potresti provare a creare un nuovo utente, magari ci sono altri file di
configurazione oltre a quelli nella dir rinominata;
quanto a modificare Xorg temo sia inutile, visto che a quanto pare è un
problema gnomesco;

orizzontali del video ...
hai provato da System->preference->display a far riconoscere il monitor
se non funziona prova ad andare in init 3 ed eseguire startx
Prova anche a vedere cosa ti scrive nel log /var/log/Xorg.log e se ci sono
errori nel log di boot.

Ho provato con una live di Ubuntu, lo schermo è del tutto regolare.

Ok, ora dovresti avere il file /ext/X11/xorg.conf sul quale puoi smanettare
per modificare il display.
Prova anche a premere i tasti ctrl+alt+'-' e ctrl+alt+'+'

Ho risolto, ma senza riuscire a trovare la causa del problema, purtroppo.

Ho fatto quindi delle prove:

1) Live Ubuntu 9.10: tutto OK

2) Ubuntu 9.10 installato, ma con desktop Fluxbox: tutto OK

3) Installazione ex novo Ubuntu, solo \, senza formattare \home: KO

4) Cancellazione ti qualsiasi directory che comincia con .g* in \home e
reinstallazione Ubuntu: KO

5) salvataggio delle configurazioni di alcuni programmi presenti in \home
(i dati hanno già il loro bravo backup) e installazione di Ubuntu,
formattando sia \ sia \home: tutto OK

Ne ho approfittato per rimettere ordine nelle directory :-)

Ringrazio tutti per l'aiuto, la mia ipotesi da newbie è che GNOME sia
andato a ramengo, ma non capisco come!
